Finishing my Double-Page with Designs and Typography
Finalizing my Double-Page with Designs and Typography
I submitted my final double-page spread design yesterday. I think there is a huge jump in quality compared to my first rough draft. I wouldn't say I am completely satisfied with the look, however, it had a few minor tweaks that made the magazine look suitable. Our teacher provided magazine powerpoints that went in depth about basic designs, column placements, and typography.
I saw that my revised double-page spread lacked some fun in its visuals. Therefore, I decided to keep the film strip in the background, but also add some blobs underneath the side stories. Although the blobs have nothing to do with the theme of memories for my magazine, it created this youthful and unique look for that section. If I were to go back in time, I could've added a silly design or small Q&A puff/reference to another page in the tiniest areas that have extra white space.
The columns of text were slightly line spaced and some words were highlighted/bolded, so that it was much easier for the eyes to see. I did consider deleting some of the content to make the page so scrunched up with words, but it'd create negative white space. So, I decided to make the third column of text cut slightly short so that the page would have some room to breathe. I also added special dotted lines cutting up each column in the text to increase the readability of the page.
My teacher spent a large chunk of class time going over the typography, or the importance of text types for our magazines. I chose words that were sans serif because the topic of my magazine, memories, is very personal and isn't supposed to be taken in a formal context. Another thing that I utilized from the notes is putting contrast on the title. The main title, "Moments that last a lifetime", has a slight curve at the end to creatively follow the shape of the film strips. I also curved the story headline of the main focal photo "Oh!! Sweet Sweet Sixteen" to make the page look more fun.
I'm almost satifised with my final double-page spreadand I am grateful for these techniques provided by my teacher. I will strive to improve with the white space and add another advanced copy technique. Overall, this revision really helps me look back over the previous concepts of magazine media and revise them creatively as if I were a professional.
