Experimenting with Canva for my Magazine
Experimenting with Canva for my Magazine
Now to get to the interesting part that I mentioned in my last blog: How did I make this Christmas cover? Well... I made that by using Canva. At first my sample magazine cover was going to be about the most anticipated, spooky, and scary event of October: Halloween! However, I love the winter season, and I feel like Christmas is always the best day to make memories. As I mentioned before, memories of people throughout their lifetime are basically the theme of my magazine. I specifically wanted my cover to be about a movie, "Polar Express", because those winter films bring back great nostalgia in elementary school. After a long thought, I decided on keeping the cover general by making the background picture of an embellished and unforgettable Christmas tree with presents under it. Also, the picture looked very 'old-timey" or "washed out" which perfectly fit with my theme of nostalgic memories.
Let's get into the nitty-gritty of this process. So, I found a picture of this beautiful Christmas tree and set it as the background. Then, I made seven text boxes and filled it in with the necessary words.
For example: “Memories” was my mast head, and the cover lines such as, “Iconic presents of this era”. I took note and inspiration of the important elements I saw in other magazines and incorporated as my own.
I used the element tool and added lines to separate: the cover lines, the masthead, the slogan, etc.
The barcode was pasted on to the page and I created a mini puff with the circle element along with special text.
“HO! HO! HO! Merry Christmas!” are the buzz words that were embellished with neon red, and the words were stylized to be curved around.
In summary, this was my sample magazine cover by using Canva. It was a very easy and fun process with the help of this app. Now, I can learn to experiment and make more covers, evidently honing my skills for my final portfolio.
